To become a Pharmacist basic qualification should be D. Pharm., B. Pharm. and Pharm. D., for post-graduation M. Pharm. course is available.
All are regular courses and institutions must be approved by Pharmacy Council of India (Except M. Pharm.). The minimum qualification for getting admissions in Pharmacy course candidate must be Passed with 50% marks in Science (PCB/ PCM). NIOS passed students not eligible for the same.
There are many pharmacists serving the country with just D. Pharm. qualification, who are not well equipped with adequate information.
The dispensing services are poor. Our present system has produced ''qualified'' pharmacists but not many ''trained'' professionals. India needs more pharmacists, not the drug sellers.
The profession of pharmacy has witnessed tremendous changes except education system. Education Regulation for D.Pharmacy was implemented during 1991. The syllabus and duration of the two-year diploma course in pharmacy education in India is completely outdated and irrelevant in the present industry context.
The pharmacy education in India is regulated by the Pharmacy Council of India and All India Council of Technical Education. But both governing bodies has failed to properly institutionalize the course and create career opportunities for the Pharmacy students. AICTE is creating blunders by approving huge number of colleges in India. Currently there is enormous gap between existing education and practice of pharmacy. Now Pharmacy Council of India has taken a decision to discontinue the D. Pharmacy course. Pharmacy Council of India working for up gradation of Pharma Education System via regular and surprise inspections of the Institutions.
What are main Holes:
>Lack of admissions and Placements, entry of unqualified and non-meritorious students into the course.
>Non focused and non-specialized way of learning for passing.
>Out dated curriculum and educational regulations. Some universities introduced Topic of Molecular Pharmacy, only basic Education.
>Most of teaching faculty dont know where to place students and they dont bother due to lack of industrial and clinical exposure.
>Unskilled ways of practical and lab training in the institutions to save money and time. Research output from Indian educational labs rarely lead to commercialization and revenue generation.
Teachers busy for paper publishing instead of research work with students. Institutional base of research is extremely narrow serious research is limited to a few.
EFFECT:
1. Non Pharma candidates running most of Medical stores by hiring Pharmacist License not the Pharmacist.
2. There is not vacancy for D. Pharm., B. Pharm. and M. Pharm. candidates. Now Pharma companies giving advertisement for Marketing persons and clearly mentioned that "Pharma Graduates need not to apply". B.Sc, Biotech, M.Sc candidates working instead of Pharmacist everywhere.
4. Every state Pharmacy Councils having their own Regulations instead of PCI. Some Pharmacy Council registers D. Pharm. students if they have done Practical training at Specified Medical Stores and some registers students if they have done Practical training at Govt. Hospitals. Because Govt. Hospitals needs free manpower instead of giving proper Practical training to the students.
5. Haryana State Pharmacy Council will not register Pharmacist if they passed Diploma or Degree from other states.
Non Pharma candidates participates in the elections.

Overall, the education system is based not only on infrastructure but also on the teachers, immorality and mismanagement has taken over education. Pharmacy teachers, have to regulate themselves, update their knowledge, deliver excellence and inspire students by adapting values, time management is the other factor that they must bring in their own personality. Education, which they have to deliver, must be of highest standard so that the upcoming pharmacists should not be a liability,
but should be able to deliver excellence at national and international levels.
